Make a difference in the lives of young people

Are you passionate about supporting young people to build positive relationships, strengthen their wellbeing and create a brighter future?

Centacare NENW is looking for a Youth Mentor to join our Supporting Adolescent Boys (SAB) program in Moree. This is an opportunity to make a meaningful difference by working directly with adolescent boys and young men who have experienced family and domestic violence (FDSV).

You’ll provide individualised, strengths-based support that helps young people develop resilience, understand healthy relationships, make positive choices and reduce the risk of using violence.

About Centacare NENW

Since 2001, Centacare NENW, the Social Services Agency of the Catholic Diocese of Armidale, has been supporting individuals, families and communities across the New England and North West region of NSW.

As a Catholic agency, we welcome everyone—regardless of religion, circumstance, ethnicity, economic situation, age, gender or ability.

Our work is guided by four core values:

Dignity | Community | Cooperation | Support

These values shape the way we work with young people, families, colleagues and our broader community.

Job Description

What This Role Involves

As a Youth Mentor, you’ll work alongside young people and other professionals to provide holistic, family-focused support.

  • Build resilience, confidence and positive connections.
  • Understand the impacts of violence and make positive choices.
  • Reduce the risk of using family, domestic and sexual violence.
  • Connect with appropriate services and supports within their community.

You’ll manage a caseload of approximately 10–15 young people, depending on individual risk, needs and complexity.

Key Responsibilities

You will:

  • Conduct comprehensive assessments of young people's individual needs, risks, family and community circumstances and developmental needs.
  • Deliver individual mentoring and support sessions using Centacare's holistic and family-oriented approach.
  • Develop positive relationships and build trust with young people and their families.
  • Coordinate referrals and support pathways with other organisations and services.
  • Work collaboratively with professionals, families, carers and community stakeholders where safe and appropriate.
  • Maintain accurate, high-quality participant records and contribute to program data and evaluation.
  • Contribute to the ongoing development and improvement of practices, interventions and outcomes.
  • Stay informed about current research and evidence-based approaches relevant to young people, FDSV and trauma-informed practice.
  • Maintain appropriate professional boundaries, confidentiality and ethical standards.
  • Actively contribute to a positive, collaborative and values-driven team environment.

Desired Skills and Experience

Skills & Experience We're Looking For

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Certificate IV or Diploma in Youth Work, Social Work or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience working with young people, including supporting case plan goals, responding to individual needs and risks, and building positive relationships.
  • Experience in the community services sector, with knowledge of family and domestic violence and an understanding of trauma-informed and culturally responsive practice.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal and emotional intelligence skills, with the ability to build trust and rapport with young people, families, colleagues and stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively, build community connections and maintain effective referral pathways, with a strong commitment to safeguarding, confidentiality, professional boundaries and ethical practice.
